Questions & Answers
Q How often should my piano be tuned?
A At least once a year unless it's new and then more frequent tuning is necessary.
Q Why does my piano go out of tune?
A Temperature and humidity have the greatest effect on tuning stability. A constant temperature of
68 degrees and 42% humidity is optimal.
Q What happens to tuning when a piano is moved?
A Moving a piano does affect its tuning stability, especially when moving from a different climate.
You should allow sufficient time for your piano to adjust to the new climate (2-4 weeks) before
tuning it.
Q What is regulation?
A Regulation is a process by which a piano is put back into the same working order as when it came from the factory. Time and wear can change critical measurements within your piano and cause it to play poorly.
Q How do you clean the keys?
A Soap and water is best. Just wring out the rag well so that water can't drip between keys.
Q Should a piano be on an inside wall?
A The less temperature and humidity change you subject a piano to the better. Also, don't let your piano sit in direct sunlight. Perhaps an inside wall would be best.
Q Do you tune with a machine?
A Byron Walters uses a machine (Sanderson Accu-Tuner) and his ear from 25 years of aural tuning alone to give you the finest accuracy and most beautiful sounding piano possible.
Q Do you repair pianos as well, and is repair extra?
A All piano services including tuning, repair, CD player-piano installation and restoration services are offered by Walters Piano Service. All these services are extra.
Q Do you charge for estimates?
A Yes.
Q Do you play piano?
A Yes, Byron Walters took formal lessons on piano from age 12. He also majored in music with a concentration in piano in college. He can evaluate what your piano needs from a pianist's perspective.
Q As an adult, is it too late for me to start piano lessons?
A It's never too late to start piano lessons. Piano playing is a lifetime activity. Some of the greatest concert artists have concertized until well into their eighties and beyond. Decide on your particular interests musically, and express that to your teacher up front. It is recommended that you get a good teacher. Like a good doctor, you may have to shop for a good piano teacher. Don't ever become discouraged with your progress as a pianist. Good piano playing takes practice! Practice is where your commitment needs to be. Everything else will follow.
